How Good Are You At Reading People? (Quiz)
Let’s discuss the importance of reading Peoples non-verbal cues, then have you take the quiz!
Being able to socialize and pick up on others emotions is a great quality for people to have, an important one, to be able to read others non-verbal cues (the fearful look in their eyes, the annoyed look they cast your way, the desirable yummy look when they see what they like!) when it comes to socializing and getting along with others we must consider how they feel to then play off of that.
According to Judith Orloff, M.D. author of The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People(link is external), Dr. Orloff is a psychiatrist, an empath, and is on the UCLA Psychiatric Clinical Faculty there are three techniques to reading people’s non-verbal cues: observe others body language, listen to your intuition, and third is to sense others emotional energy.
Reading Non-verbal Cues
Research has shown that words account for only seven percent of how we communicate whereas our body language (55 percent) and voice tone (30 percent) represent the rest. psychology today
- Pay attention to appearance. A well dressed person may indicate ambition were as a person in a tee and jeans may represent a laid back person.
- Notice posture. Do they hold their head high in confidence or do they slouch and keep their head lowered indicating submission.
- Watch for physical movements. Leaning and Distance—Observe where people lean. Generally, we lean toward those we like and away from those we don’t. Crossed arms and legs—This pose suggests defensiveness, anger, or self-protection. When people cross their legs they tend to point the toes of the top leg towards the person they are most at ease with. Hiding one’s hands—When people place their hands in their laps, pockets, or put them behind their back it suggests that they are hiding something. Lip biting or cuticle picking—When people bite or lick their lips or pick their cuticles they are trying to soothe themselves under pressure or in an awkward situation. (I have done the cuticle and nail playing before when I wasn’t sure of my feelings for someone I was talking to and I felt confused and awkward with how to deal with it at the moment… just an example!)
- Interpret facial expressions. It’s hard to have a poker face when it comes to our emotions, usually the face says it all and therefore being able to interpret how a person is feeling by reading their facial expression is a helpful tool in interacting with them.
Listen To Your Intuition
You can tune into someone beyond their body language and words. Intuition is what your gut feels, not what your head says. It’s nonverbal information you perceive via images, ah-has, and body knowings, rather than logic. If you want to understand someone, what counts the most is who the person is, not their outer trappings. Intuition lets you see further than the obvious to reveal a richer story says Dr Orlaff.
Sense Emotional Energy
There are certain things you can pick up on when it comes to energy… What kind of presence do they send off? do they give you a sense of friendliness or give you a sense of fear and are off-putting? Another great way to pick up on emotional energy is to watch their eyes (which will be in the quiz below, feel free to take it and see what you get!) Do the eyes tell you they are caring, angry, sad? How is their tone when speaking, laughing, etc…? tone can tell a lot from nervousness to anger to shyness… And one more helpful energy cue to pay attention to is through touch… Do they have a firm hand shake or a weak timid one? do they give awesome bear-hugs or do they barely touch with a small pat on the back?
