Does How You Dress Impact Your Mood?
What are you wearing today? business attire, sweats, jeans and a tee, fancy outfit? hmmm… picking out clothes for the day may actually BE important, it may actually impact how you go about your day and either motivate you to tackle your TO-DO list or get you to hunker-down and lazily slouch on the couch. Be careful with how you dress yourself people!
The Research Behind It
Research now shows us that not only what we wear impacts how others perceive us, but it in fact impacts how we feel about ourselves. How interesting that something as simple as picking out clothing can determine how we go about our day. It works like this… Scientists gave it a name “enclothed cognition”, and Adam Hajo and Adam D. Galinsky, both professors at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, write in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, explain that enclothed cognition “involves the co-occurrence of two independent factors — the symbolic meaning of the clothes and the physical experience of wearing them.” Huffingtonpost
To test their theory on this lovely topic they had subjects wear different clothing while performing tasks and the results were in plain sight, subjects performed more confidently while wearing a professional look. There are plenty more studies from various scientist and professors that show the same results, even wearing a super hero tee boosted subjects confidence level! “When we put on a piece of clothing we cannot help but adopt some of the characteristics associated with it, even if we are unaware of it.”says Professor Karen J. Pine, of the University of Hertfordshire (U.K.)…(I don’t know about you, but I’ll be purchasing a couple super hero shirts to help my can-do-attitude and tackle any obstacles that comes my way.)
When it comes down to it, we should all dress like super heroes to instill a few of the characteristics like helping others, feeling stronger and making the right choices… Unless you want to feel tough, then dress in a power suit and call yourself the Godfather. OR you want to feel confident and sexy (not to be mistaken for slutty, sorry for that offensive word, but hey it rings true!) then dress impeccable like Audrey Hepburn or if you’re a man take your shirt off and strut your stuff (only kidding!) then dress like Robert Redford in GQ attire. Are you ill? do you want to feel comfortable? heck! pull out those comfy oversized sweats and keep yourself warm (sweats are not evil to the clothing world) so work out in them, be sick in them, watch your favorite movie in them, and ladies, if it’s that time of the month… wear whatever the heck you want!
Take care readers! …And remember: dress to impress (unless your home after a long days work, then put on that soft robe and walk around the house as the Queen/King you are!)
