Today we have an amazing article written by Ashley Andrews for the TwinCitiesView. It is an interesting read as you dive into the affects clothing has on each and everyone of us in our daily lives. Enjoy!
Do Clothes Affect Your Life and Experiences? You don’t have to be in the fashion business or the garment business to be aware of how important clothes are to shaping our sense of identity in the 21st Century. Our clothes do more than protect our bodies from the elements, conform to society’s ideas of public decency, or hide or accentuate our physical shape. Our clothes also send out subliminal signals that affect us and everyone around us. Sometimes these signals can be obvious. Think of whimsical or amusing messages on T–shirts. Sometimes they can be more subtle, like showing up under-dressed for a job interview. It sends the wrong message even if you are the perfect candidate.
Clothing and CultureRight or wrong, what you wear, what we all wear, has an impact on our culture, and our culture has an impact on what we wear.
1. Form and FunctionClothes are usually about form and function. Form is its stylish quality; function is its usefulness. There are occasions when clothes have both form and function. This may occur in specialty garments like seamless clothing for kids that are both attractive and functional, designed for kids who are hypersensitive to certain kinds of fabric. It can make them feel confident that they look good without the irritation that comes from regular kids clothes. There are times when there is function without much attention to the aesthetics of form, as in the case of worker’s overalls. These are often highly durable and can even be chemical resistant, but they will never make a fashion statement. Then there are those anomalies when there is only a focus on style without any concern about practical value. These dresses made of chocolate might look good on the runway, but no one is wearing them to the office anytime soon.
2. Clothes and AttractionPeacocks wear colorful feathers; humans wear colorful, stylish clothes. Clothes give us some control over how others see and judge us. While cosmetics and grooming, as well as diet and exercise, can give us some control over how we are perceived, our choice of clothing has a much larger impact. In fact, it can make the difference to getting a job or not getting it, winning over an audience on a pulpit or at a seminar or disappointing them, or attracting a life partner when out on a date. Dressing for an occasion when we want to be influential can have such a strong impact that it nullifies any shortcoming in the symmetry of our features or the contours of our body.
3. Clothes and subculturesIn the modern world, we don’t have tribes, we have subcultures. Even in ethnic or religious groups, there are subcultures. A subculture is a quest for belonging to a group which shares similar values. The way we signal which subculture we identify with is often based on our clothing. If you prefer formal dress, you’re signaling that you’re interested in economic success, and if you prefer eccentric clothing, you’re signaling that you’re anti-establishment.When you mostly wear casual clothes, you’re signaling neutrality, ordinariness, and a lack of identification with any particular subculture.
Practical ApplicationsThis awareness about the social impact of clothes can make a huge difference in your goals and values. While most of us dress to fit in with our social groups or work culture, we can use clothes in a much more intentional way. In one of his self-improvement books, Brian Tracy shares the story of a young man in a company who wanted to be successful in his business. Since he was a junior clerk, he dressed in the same type of clothing as his associates. He then noticed another class of people in the company who appeared to be making all the money, the professional salespeople. Instead of dressing as informally as the other junior clerks, he started to dress in the style of the successful salespeople. As a result, the salespeople began to mentor him. Within a few short years, he was a highly successful salesman in the company.Once you understand the psychology and sociology of clothing, you can use it to better fit in with your environment. This awareness can be used to change your life and your experiences.Thank you Ashley Andrews for this wonderful and informative article. I always love to learn more about topics! It’s good to know that dressing certain ways can in fact affect us. Take a look at your wardrobe people!Take care readers!
